Located in northwestern Rwanda, Volcanoes National Park is the country's most iconic wildlife destination and one of Africa's oldest national parks, established in 1925. It protects the Virunga Mountain range and forms part of the larger Virunga Conservation Area shared with Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. It's globally celebrated as one of the last remaining habitats of the endangered mountain gorilla and as the research base of primatologist Dian Fossey. The park covers approximately 160 square kilometers of montane rainforest, bamboo forest, volcanic slopes, open grassland, and alpine vegetation. Five of the eight Virunga volcanoes lie within its boundaries: Karisimbi, Bisoke, Muhabura, Gahinga, and Sabyinyo. It sits about two to three hours by road from Kigali, with the town of Musanze serving as the main gateway and offering luxury lodges, boutique hotels, and community tourism experiences.
Gorilla trekking through rainforest-covered volcanic slopes, with treks lasting two to eight hours and groups capped at eight visitors per family
Golden monkey trekking in the bamboo forest, generally shorter and easier than gorilla trekking, and well suited to families
Volcano hiking, including the Mount Bisoke crater lake hike and the demanding two-day summit trek up Mount Karisimbi, Rwanda's highest peak at 4,507 meters
Hikes up Muhabura, Sabyinyo, and Gahinga for experienced hikers, with cross-border views into Uganda and Congo
The Dian Fossey tomb hike to the former Karisoke Research Center, passing the graves of Fossey and several of the gorillas she worked to protect
Birdwatching in the bamboo and montane forest zones, home to species such as the Rwenzori turaco and handsome francolin
Community tourism around Musanze and Kinigi, including traditional dance, village visits, banana beer experiences, and craft markets
The park protects several habituated mountain gorilla families that visitors can track daily with experienced ranger guides. Beyond gorillas, it's also home to golden monkeys, forest elephants, buffaloes, bushbucks, spotted hyenas, black-fronted duikers, and more than 200 bird species, including several Albertine Rift endemics.

Year round, though the dry seasons (June to September and December to February) bring easier trails and hiking conditions. Rain is still possible at any time in this rainforest environment.
